Event Details

The ASLA Hawaii 2 Day Google SketchUp seminar will focus on step by step tutorials and demonstrations for landscape architects wishing to learn Google SketchUp, the fastest growing 3D modeling software. Learn from Daniel Tal, landscape architect and author of A Guide to Modeling Site Plans, Terrain and Architecture. Participants will learn to integrate SketchUp into their project workflow while learning a valuable skill at Honolulu Community College’s AutoCAD facility.

Day 1 – Introduction to SketchUp Basics

Day 1 of the workshop is geared towards SketchUp beginners and individuals who have a passing familiarity with the modeling program. Participants will:

·          Be introduced to SketchUp’s Basic tools and work environment

·          Learn to use components and navigate SketchUp 3D space

·          Apply the skills they learn to site plan modeling to create rich landscape environments

·          Learn how to create and acquire 3D components such as trees and shrubs and other site amenities to enhance project models. Participants will receive custom SketchUp components such as trees, shrubs, people, cars and more. These components will be valuable to users in the continued creation of project models.

Day 2 – Intermediate and Advanced SketchUp Site Plan Modeling

Day two of the seminar focuses on more intermediate and advanced concepts. Participants from the first day sessions should have achieved enough working knowledge to easily understand the more advanced modeling concepts. Day two includes:

·          Conceptual Grading: SketchUp’s Sandbox tools can be used to simulate slopes, grades and terrain without the use of Digital Elevation Modeling. Participants will learn to how to model complex organic forms such as grades and canopies.

·          AutoCAD to SketchUp: AutoCAD site plans are constructed early in the design process for a project. CAD plans offer ready made line work that can be used to quickly construct a model in SketchUp. The second half of the Day 2 sessions reviews a detailed process for integrating AutoCAD site plans with SketchUp.

·          Included in the AutoCAD to SketchUp seminar is a review of powerful Ruby Scripts or custom Tools that enable SketchUp users to transform AutoCAD information into practical SketchUp base drawings. The scripts are a $100 value that is provided for all participants to use for their own practice.

Bio: Daniel Tal is a practicing Landscape Architect with over 10 years of experience. He currently works for RNL Design in Denver, Colorado. Daniel’s forthcoming book (July 2009) titled SketchUp Process Modeling: A Guide to Modeling Site Plans, Terrain and Architecture, details a complete method for integrating SketchUp for design professionals. Daniel continues to consult with Google SketchUp to help provide direction for tools usable by Landscape Architect. Daniel conducts seminars on behalf of Google and consults with private firms on how better to integrate SketchUp into their practices.
